A Romantic Cornwall Getaway: A Couples' Itinerary
Cornwall does romance properly. Empty coves you'll mostly have to yourselves, sunset dinners over the harbour, secluded cottages a long way from anyone else's WiFi, and 400 miles of coastline begging to be walked hand in hand. Whether it's a honeymoon, an anniversary, a long-overdue weekend away, or the trip that ends with a ring, Cornwall sets the scene without trying.
This itinerary is built around a long weekend or short break based at Trewena Cottages near Falmouth. Self-contained, private, fire pit, ten minutes from one of the best food scenes in Cornwall.
At a glance
- Length: 3 to 4 nights, easily extended to a week
- Base: Trewena Cottages near Falmouth (private gardens, superking beds, fire pits)
- Best for: anniversaries, honeymoons, weekend escapes, the proposal trip
- Best season: May, June or September for the sweet spot of weather and quiet
- Pack: walking shoes (the coast path), swim kit, sunset-friendly clothes, a good bottle of wine for the fire pit
- Pre-book: dinner at The Cove or the Water's Edge for any Friday or Saturday night
Day 1: Arrive and slow down
Park the car, unpack at speed, then take the long way round the cottage. Light the fire pit. Open the wine. The Cornish sky does the rest.
For dinner, drive into Falmouth (10 minutes) and pick from the romantic shortlist:
- The Cove at Maenporth for a smart-occasion dinner with views directly over the beach
- The Water's Edge at the Greenbank Hotel for fine dining over the harbour
- The Chain Locker for a cosy waterfront pub night with a proper fire and good wine
- Cribbs Kitchen for an intimate alley-tucked dinner if you'd rather a quieter room
The full picks are in our romantic restaurants and pubs in Falmouth guide.
Day 2: Coast walk and slow lunch
Spend the morning on the coast. The classic local route is the Gylly, Swanpool and Maenporth coast walk, around 5 miles return on the South West Coast Path with three beaches along the way. Take a pasty and a flask. Arrive at Maenporth in time for a long lunch on the sand at The Cove or the Beach Cafe.
Afternoon, choose your tempo:
- Slow: drive down to Castle Beach below Pendennis Point. The wall to lean against, a paperback each, a coffee from the Castle Beach Cafe up the steps. Easy, quiet, characterful.
- Adventurous: kayak on the Helford River from Helford Passage. Hidden creeks, herons, no traffic.
- Cultural: wander up to Pendennis Castle for the views and the Tudor history, with the headland walk back as a sunset reward.
Back at the cottage, light the fire pit again. Dinner can be cooked in (Trewena's kitchens are properly equipped) or back into Falmouth.
Day 3: Hidden coves or the Lizard
This is the day for either a hidden-cove discovery or a Lizard road trip.
Option A: Hidden coves on the Helford. Drive to the National Trust car park at Bosveal and walk down to Bosahan Cove for one of the most secluded swims in the area, then on along the Helford Passage walk to Glendurgan Garden and a riverside lunch at the Ferry Boat Inn. Quiet, romantic, very Cornwall.
Option B: Lizard road trip. A full-day driving loop: Church Cove at Gunwalloe, Kynance Cove with its turquoise water and sand bars at low tide, Lizard Point for the southerly tip and lunch, Cadgwith for a working fishing village with thatched cottages, and back via the old serpentine works at Carleon Cove. Our one-day Lizard road trip has the full schedule.
For dinner on Day 3 we'd recommend booking ahead: The Cove if you haven't been yet, or Hooked on the Rocks for sunset dining over Swanpool.
Day 4 (if extending): Penzance, Marazion and the Minack
Drive west for a day on the Penwith side. Highlights:
- St Michael's Mount at Marazion, the tidal causeway and clifftop castle
- Porthcurno and Pedn Vounder for the most photographed beach in Cornwall
- The Minack Theatre for an evening performance on the cliffs (book well in advance)
Pair with a hike on the Lizard or the SWCP if you'd rather walk than drive.
Other things to do for couples
If you've got more time or you'd rather pick a la carte:
- Stargazing back at the cottage. Trewena's secluded location and dark skies are properly good for it. Blankets, a thermos, a clear night.
- The Lost Gardens of Heligan, an hour's drive east. Secret paths, thick planting, easy to lose each other in for a happy half-hour.
- Healey's Cornish Cyder Farm for a tasting session and a long lunch.
- The Eden Project if it's been on your list, dramatic biome architecture and good food in the dome.
- Trebah Garden on the Helford for sub-tropical planting that runs down to a private cove.
Why Trewena works as the base
The cottages are set up specifically for couples:
- Self-contained one-bed cottages with no shared walls or shared spaces
- Superking or king-size beds with proper linens
- Private outdoor spaces with fire pits, garden seating, and the Cornish night sky overhead
- Fully equipped kitchens for the cook-in evenings, with Cornish wine and cider in the welcome basket
- Ten minutes from the centre of Falmouth for restaurants, but a world away from the noise
- Local recommendations from us in person when you arrive, including the hidden spots that don't make it onto blog posts
Three cottages, all set up the same way: Little Avalon (1850s labourer's cottage), The Pigsty and The Tractor Shed (converted barns).
Frequently asked questions
What's the most romantic thing to do in Cornwall?
A walk on the South West Coast Path at sunset, dinner at a harbour-side restaurant, and a fire-pit evening back at the cottage takes a lot of beating. For a single high-impact experience, an evening performance at the Minack Theatre on the cliffs at Porthcurno is hard to top.
When is the best time for a romantic break in Cornwall?
May, June and September are the sweet spot: warm enough for outdoor evenings, long daylight, gardens at peak, and the worst of the summer crowds either side. Out-of-season weekends from October to March offer empty beaches, dramatic seas, fire-pit weather and accommodation at a fraction of summer prices.
Where should I stay for a romantic Cornwall trip?
A self-contained cottage with privacy, an outdoor space and a wood-burner is the format that suits couples best. Trewena Cottages near Falmouth is set up for it: secluded countryside location, private gardens, fire pits, superking beds, ten minutes' drive from town for dinner.
What are the best romantic restaurants in Cornwall?
Around Falmouth: The Cove at Maenporth, the Water's Edge at the Greenbank Hotel, Hooked on the Rocks at Swanpool, and Cribbs Kitchen tucked into a Falmouth back alley. Further afield: Restaurant Four, and the smaller spots in Helford and Penzance. See our full romantic restaurants guide for the rest.
Where can you propose in Cornwall?
Pendennis Point at sunset, the cliffs above Kynance Cove, the secluded coves of Pedn Vounder, the South West Coast Path between Castle Beach and Pendennis, the Minack Theatre at sunset, or quietly back at the cottage by the fire pit. Book restaurants ahead and tip staff in advance if you want them in on the plan.
Are there hidden beaches for couples in Cornwall?
Yes, plenty. Bosahan Cove on the Helford River, Nanjizal near Land's End, Porthbeor on the Roseland Peninsula, and Pedn Vounder near Porthcurno all reward the walk in with seclusion that's hard to find elsewhere on the south coast. See our hidden beaches and coves guide for the full list.
Is Cornwall good for honeymoons?
Yes. Cornwall offers privacy, dramatic scenery, a strong food scene, and a manageable distance from London (4 to 5 hours). The combination of self-contained cottages, romantic dining and big landscape suits honeymooners well, particularly out of peak summer when the county is quieter.
How long do I need for a romantic Cornwall trip?
A long weekend (3 to 4 nights) is the minimum for a proper unwind. A week gives you space to explore the wider county at an unhurried pace. Couples often combine 2 nights of base time at the cottage with day trips to the Lizard, Penzance and Marazion, or the Roseland.
