Maenporth Beach, Falmouth: A Local's Guide
Maenporth sits at the ocean edge of a lush green valley, backed by tall trees and thick woods, flanked by cliffs on either side. It's only a 10-minute drive from the centre of Falmouth but feels a world away. A wide sandy beach, sheltered swimming, properly good food at the back of the sand, and views across Falmouth Bay to St Anthony Head in the distance.
A wide, sheltered beach
The wide expanse of sand is popular with families, couples and kids. Maenporth gets busy in summer, but at quieter times of year you won't be fighting any crowds. The two flanking headlands break up the prevailing wind and the bay arrangement keeps the swell down, so the water is generally calmer than the open coast: ideal for paddlers, swimmers and gentle paddleboarding.
At the back of the beach there's a large pay-and-display car park, with the sand a few steps from where you park. That makes Maenporth one of the easier beaches in the area for getting in and out with kit, dogs, kids or all three.
Eating at Maenporth
Two options, both right above the sand:
- The Cove is the smart option. A celebrated seafood restaurant directly above the beach, with picture-window views over the bay and a menu that takes the local catch seriously. Worth booking, particularly for evenings and weekends.
- The Maenporth Beach Cafe is the easy option. Coffee, breakfast, paninis, sandwiches, ice cream. Sand-side seating, dog friendly, perfect for a post-swim refuel.
What's around
Looking out from the beach you can see across Falmouth Bay to Pendennis Point on the left and St Anthony Head on the Roseland Peninsula in the distance. Watch for seals on the rocks at either end at low tide.
Maenporth marks the southern end of one of the area's classic coast walks, the Gylly, Swanpool and Maenporth coast walk, around 5 miles return along the South West Coast Path. The other direction continues south along the coast through Rosemullion Head towards the Helford River and Glendurgan Garden.
