Cornwall is a fantastic place to eat from field to fork. The trick is knowing where to go for the freshest eggs, the juiciest chops, and the tenderest steak, and that takes a bit of local knowledge. Here’s where we send guests at Trewena, with a couple of further-afield favourites worth the drive.

Local farm shops, all under 15 minutes from Trewena

Bailey’s Country Store, Penryn

Bailey’s Country Store is the all-rounder: local meats, fruit, veg, dairy, garden supplies, the lot. Deliveries available by booking. 7 minutes from Trewena.

The Food Barn at Tregew

The Food Barn was born in lockdown. When the shellfish market collapsed in March 2020, Martin Laity and Tom Knights of Sailor’s Creek Shellfish put their heads together and started selling their produce, plus other local producers’, from a barn at Tregew. There’s a sound system, benches inside the barn, and food trucks selling coffee and pizza. Organic veg, locally-produced meat, cheeses, wines, beers, and bakes. Saturdays only. 10 minutes from Trewena, and a natural stop on the way to Flushing or Mylor.

Argal Farm Shop

Argal Farm Shop is a proper family-run farm shop near Argal Lake. Fresh produce and locally-sourced treats, easy to combine with a walk around the reservoir loop. 5 minutes from Trewena.

Perranarworthal Fruit and Veg Stall

The fruit and veg stall at Perranarworthal sits on the left as you head west through the village, just before the Norway Inn. Tasty and convenient. 7 minutes from Trewena.

Dowstall Farm

Dowstall Farm does click-and-collect plus fresh produce from their own farm and a curated selection from other Cornish producers. 12 minutes from Trewena.

A bit further afield, worth the drive

Primrose Herd, Redruth

Primrose Herd is the destination for a bacon fix. Hogs pudding, every cut of pork you can think of, and online ordering too. About 20 minutes from Trewena.

Trevaskis Farm, near Hayle

Trevaskis Farm is the big-name Cornish farm shop further west. Pick-your-own in season, an excellent butchery, a restaurant, and a generous fruit and veg selection. Worth the trip if you’re heading that way for the day. About 30 minutes from Trewena.

And the eggs

A handful of micro-producers around Mabe and Penryn sell eggs at the end of their driveways, usually a pound in an honesty box for half a dozen. Honestly, some of the best eggs you’ll ever eat.
